Harvey Street <br>Malvern

project overview

Situated in inner east Melbourne, a wonderfully intact heritage Victorian building and a large sloping site were the main constraints for Nicholas Murray Architects in the creation of this residential project. The brief meant the Melbourne house would need to be on several levels and allow the rear informal spaces to flow down onto the landscape. A glass walled lift would allow the occupants to remain there forever.

Again Nicholas Murray Architects contrasted the old and the modern in a contemporary bold and honest architectural approach. Black zinc featured heavily inside and outside to contrast the old red brickwork. Mafi Austrian timber was used on the floors and joinery to warm up the spaces.

A cantilevered steel carport suspends above the cars and delicately touches the existing residence fabric so as not to disrupt it. An entirely new verandah was added above the entrance as was a bay to the study.
