Starting off as one of the many warehouses found in the area, this project’s challenge was to turn it into a retreat for a professional couple without abandoning its past. A rustic yet elegant approach was taken to combine the original characteristics of the structure with the refined contemporary lifestyle of its occupants to create a symphony of harmonious contradiction. With a carefully controlled palette of materials, this split level retreat is an epitome of inner city living, commanding a magnificent view over the city and Docklands skyline from its top two levels. The clients desire for cooking lead to a fully stainless steel commercial kitchen and their extensive wine collection resulted in an underground climate controlled wine cellar and dining space. A commercial lift meant they can serve guests in the basement cellar dining space from the kitchen on level 3 and also meant they can remain in the 4 storey house beyond retirement. Intelligent home automation means the home is future proofed and easy to control locally and remotely.
Measuring 500 sqm of internal space careful consideration had to be given to environmental sustainability. 10kW photovoltaic cells were installed to help provide the necessary power. A 10,000 litre water tank helps to control water usage and zoned hydronic heating and cooling were fully integrated into the design.
